Light from Andromeda traveled 2.5 million years before hitting my sensor. Getting it to look like something real takes dozens of 30-second exposures, a motorized equatorial mount, and a lot of patience.

The Journey

How I Got Here

Year One
8-inch Dobsonian — and a lot of blurry galaxies
Started with a Dobsonian and a Canon Rebel T7. Didn't realize the scope didn't track the sky until I had dozens of trailed images that were supposed to be galaxies. Each blurry frame was still exciting — it was something.
Adapting
Learned to work with what I had
Started with the Moon — bright enough that short exposures didn't trail. Then moved to Jupiter, where I learned to stack video frames until the cloud bands resolved. The planet rewarded patience in a way the galaxies hadn't yet.
The Upgrade
72mm APO refractor on a motorized EQ mount
A 72mm apochromatic refractor on a motorized equatorial mount changed everything. The mount tracks the sky's rotation, so exposures can go to 30 seconds and beyond without trailing.
Andromeda
2.5 million light-years, resolved
Dozens of 30-second exposures that individually looked like nothing — gray noise with a faint smudge. Stacked and stretched until a spiral galaxy resolved from the background. Knowing that light had been traveling 2.5 million years before reaching my sensor made the hours of processing feel worth it.
Connection
Why astrophotography ties everything together
What I love most is how it connects everything: the technical patience of stacking frames, the physics of light and exposure, and the reminder that the objects I'm photographing inspired Gagarin, Belka and Strelka, and everyone who ever looked up and wondered. My family has a lot of pride in the USSR's Space Race accomplishments — and as a Russian-American, I feel those two legacies whenever I'm at the eyepiece.
